Pickleball's Taking Over Country Clubs
Popularity BOOM!
Destination Pickleball is thrilled to report that while golf‘s popularity has seen a surge the past year, it’s Pickleball that’s seen an explosion in recent years – both in terms of participants and facilities adding courts. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association‘s participation report, pickleball saw a growth rate of 21% in 2020, jumping from 3.5 million players in the U.S. to over 4.2 million. Not only this, but the average age of a pickleball player is 38.1 years old and has almost a 60–40 split between men and women.
Pickleball's Taking OVER
Furthermore, there are other pickleball–loving LPGA players such as 29–year–old Amy Olson, who was the runner–up at the 2020 U.S. Open. Not to mention, Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar, two PGA TOUR players who have also taken up Pickleball! Clubhouses around the US are recognizing the benefits of this hybrid sport, as they are transforming some existing tennis areas into multiple pickleball courts. For example, BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida is rated the No. 2 tennis facility in the country and has been the home training ground for Venus and Serena Williams for almost two decades. It has also added an entire complex of pickleball courts this year too, to keep up with the current craze. From the synergies between golf and pickleball, to the prominent professional golfers who have taken it up, it’s clear that pickleball is here to stay. We at Destination Pickleball are excited to see the growth and development this sport will continue to have.
New Revenue Stream
Moreover, companies such as Troon have noticed the buzz around the sport and have also partnered with one of Pickleball‘s leading equipment brands, Selkirk Sport. As Troon President and CEO Tim Schantz has commented, “Pickleball has certainly caught people’s attention. There are clubs with multiple tennis courts that are converting some of that space into Pickleball courts and, given the demand for those Pickleball courts, they’re thinking about more.” Sherri Steinhauer, two–time major championship winner, was one of the first professional golfers to delve into the sport and is now a brand ambassador for Selkirk.
